CBD Earthquake Damage

aviation-hse-eqpaviation-hse-eqp-bA quick walk through the CBD and Courtenay Place areas this morning reveals minimal exterior damage compared to the last big one in Wellington. Our first photo shows 2 broken windows on Level 6  in Aviation House – cnr Featherston & Johnston St  (there’s another one on the Johnston St side making a total of 3.  There were 45 broken in the last big quake in this building as a comparision. Aviation House was built in 1928 and similar buildings of that age –  Harbour City Centre and Seabridge House (110 Featherston St) have several  broken windows as well. A further photo shows remnants of a rusted canopy (currently under dispute between the w.c.c. and the landlord).  Several streets are blocked off as several windows are loose and with the wind getting up, there is a  fear of them falling into the street. Apart from that, there are a  lot of engineers visiting all the buildings and assessing any damage. Hopefully most CBD buildings will get a big tick within the next 1 – 2 days and the town will be back to normal before the end of the week
